A Paton area farmer was killed Tuesday morning when the tractor he was driving was struck in the rear by a semi tractor-trailer.
Pat Fields, 46, of rural Paton was eastbound at 11:20 am in the 2400 block of County Road E-18 (130th St), driving a 1965 Farmall 656 tractor when he was struck in the rear by an eastbound 1996 Freight Liner Semi pulling an empty grain trailer. Both vehicles went toward the north ditch. Fields’ tractor entered the ditch and rolled on to him. Fields was pronounced dead at the scene.
Troy Shaw, 25, of Harcourt, driver of the semi, was not injured.
Fields’ tractor and the semi-tractor were both total losses.
The Iowa State Patrol is conducting the investigation. The Greene County sheriff’s office, Greene County Emergency Medical Services, and the Grand Junction, Jefferson and Paton fire departments responded to the scene.
